Adding a dormer to a roof


Dormer lessons

This is devided into 5 parts planning, constraints, modeling, the Dormer opening, and attaching the wall to the roof.

Planning

A Dormer is a mix of parts and methods. Planning it out is crucial to getting it right. You need know it’s

· location

· size

· width

· length

· height

· roof style (hip, gable, shed, ect.)

· roof slope

In a plan view go to your main roof plan view and draw some model lines. It is also best to draw a few model lines to determine the above categories. Constraints

Prior to modeling, you will need to set two levels that will determine the base constraint and top constraint.

Sometimes you will need edit the profile of the main wall if the dormer cuts through the main roof. Then you will need only one top constraint level.

And a dormer can even be a part of the main roof if a slope is applied to part of the roof

Modeling

WALLS

Once the above has been done the next step is to add some walls. The following is for a dormer that is set back or does not cut out the main roof in front of the dormer

1. Go to the correct plan view

2. Set the correct view range for the view.

3. enter the wall command.

4. Determine draw style ie line rectangle arc ect.

5. Go to the option bar and select

A. Top constraint

B. Location line

C. Chaining

D. Offset from location line

E. Corner chamfering (if any)

F. Join Status

6. next in properties on the left side of the screen determine the type of wall you need or edit the type and create a new wall with new materials.

7. one you have done the above, model the wall as needed.

8. When done escape out to the tool.

ROOF

Once you have the walls you can add the roof. The completed roof should not touch the main roof. We will finish the roof with a roof join command located in the modify tab in the geometry panel.

1. Go to the correct plan view

2. Set the correct view range for the view.

3. enter the wall command.

4. Determine draw style ie line rectangle arc ect

5. Go to the option bar and select

A. Define slope

B. Overhang

C. Extend wall to core

6. next in properties on the left side of the screen determine the type of roof you need or edit the type and create a new wall with new materials.

7. Draw the profile of the roof and set the lines that will determine slope make the slope is not to high or the join command will give you a warning that you are not satisfying the boundaries of the main roof.

8. Finnish the roof clicking the green check mark in the mode panel of the ribbon

Attaching the roof

1. Go to a 3d view and focus on the dormer.

2. Go the modify tab and click the roof join command located in the geometry panel

3. Click on the edge on the dormer roof closest to the main roof

4. Click on the main roof.

The dormer opening

Now all the modeling is done its time to cut a hole in the roof for the dormer. You will notice we have not attached the walls. We need them for a boundary.

1. Go to a 3d view.

2. Turn your visual stylwireframeme

3. Click the dormer opening command in the architecture tab in the openings panel

4. Click the main roof

5. Pick the edges or surfaces of the dormer walls anro. . Make sure all the profile lines cross

6. After finishing picking edges escape or hit the modify button and check all the lines have the correct locatioo inside or outside of the wall.

7. Finnish by clicking the green check mark in the mode panel

Attaching the walls

There are two ways to attach the walls to the roof attach top base and use base the option bar or modify the profile of the wall.
